Fire Emergencies

EXIT THE BUILDING IMMEDIATELY!
DO NOT USE ELEVATORS.
FOLLOW EVACUATION PROCEDURES. Location maps are posted on each floor of your building’s stairwell.

Fire Specific Precautions:

  • Feel the door that leads from your office to the corridor.
  • If the door is hot or smoke is seeping in, DO NOT OPEN. If you become trapped in your office, keep door closed and seal off any cracks. Use a cell phone if your regular phone has lost service and call 911. Identify the building, floor, and office suite where you are trapped.
  • If the door feels cool, OPEN CAUTIOUSLY. Be braced to slam it shut if the hall is full of smoke or if you feel heat pressure against the door. If hall is clear, proceed with the office specific escape plan.
  • Proceed to the nearest exit, close doors behind you and leave the building. Assemble with your fellow employees a safe distance from the building as directed by the Fire Department. Await instructions from your Office Manager or Safety Coordinator.
  • The fire/sprinkler system automatically alerts the local fire department. However, a backup call to 911 should be made from a safe place. Give the address of the building, the floor you are on, and the suite number, or pull the nearest fire pull station while exiting.
  • Proceed to the nearest exit, close doors behind you and leave the building. Assemble with your fellow employees a safe distance from the building as directed by the Fire Department. Await instructions from your Office Manager or Safety Coordinator.
  • If caught in smoke or heat, stay low where the air is better. Take short breaths (through nose) until you reach an area of refuge.
